The recorded exemplar is La Dame d'Aprigny, who kept a winding ravine on the ground of a later street of Bayeux: she barred passage with her turning dances, held out her hand, and if a man joined her she released him after a round or two — but if he drew back she seized him and flung him into the briar-filled ditches beside the way.
