Chalchihuitlicue — her name refers to the jade or greenstone of her skirt — governs the waters of the surface in Central Mexican tradition: lakes, rivers, springs and the standing water people depend on, as distinct from the rain that falls, which belongs to the storm god with whom she is paired.
The narrative that carries most weight has Unktehi rise against the people, flooding the land, and the Thunderbirds answer with lightning and fire until the water is dried and the monster and its brood are destroyed.
Ryujin's power over the sea is described as being expressed most sharply through weather and tide: in one well-known episode, he is said to raise a violent storm against Prince Yamato Take's fleet after the prince boasts arrogantly about the strait he is crossing, a storm only calmed when the prince's wife sacrifices herself to the sea on his behalf.
