Fire as renewal rather than ruin is a thought many traditions had independently, and each time it took avian shape, so that the phoenix, the fenghuang, the hō-ō and the zhar-ptitsa all cycle through flame back into themselves. The tie is not plumage. It is the proposition that an ending, correctly performed, is an intake of breath.
