Bushyasta belongs to the demonology of Zoroastrian Persia, and the compendia record her office precisely: she is the yellow demon of sloth, the lethargic genius whose whole work is making people oversleep and so leave their religious duties unperformed. In a religion whose daily practice was built on appointed prayers, the personification is pointed — the demon's weapon is not violence but the warmth of bed at dawn, and every believer who slept through an obligation had met her.

The yellow of her epithet is the one physical fact the record insists on, and it sits inside a larger Zoroastrian habit of colored and paired abstractions: the faith's demonology assigns a named adversary to each virtue, and Bushyasta is the appointed enemy of diligence.
