An offended Bannik was considered capable of burning the bathhouse down in retaliation for neglect or disrespect, but despite this fearsome reputation, some tellings also credit him with a protective role, guarding the space against other, more hostile spirits, and the bathhouse remained in practice the customary place where many peasant children were born.
